Why was Venice known as the jewel of the Adriatic during the Renaissance period?
Geography of Venice:
Built on 117 islands coast of Northern Italy
Located in a lagoon
Connected to the Adriatic Sea
Divided by more than 150 canals
Connected by over 400 bridges
Many buildings rested on pillars stuck in the mud
Safe from attack-ships couldn’t move in shallow water
Very strong navy
Very wealthy
Life in Venice:
*citizens called Venetians*wealth built on trade with Northern Europe, Syria, Egypt etc.
*Ship building strong industry
*Head of the government called a Doge
* printers/scholars published classical ancient Greek manuscripts
*most famous painter: Titian portraits of Popes and Holy Roman EmperorVenice was constantly under attack by the Turks and eventually lost its prime position.
