Agenda:
Now that we are done with the book, The Lightning Thief, we are going to celebrate by watching the movie. Hooray! You guys have earned this. So enjoy. There will be some review as well as a follow up activity from the movie. Have fun:).
Follow the links below to get started.
Vocabulary:
Let’s review what we have learned with a quick look back. In the agenda video I will take you on a tour through space and time as we re-examine some of the more tricky Vocabulary Spellings and meanings (ie; ghost diagraphs and silent “e” words).
Reading Comprehension:
Follow the link below to watch The Lightning Thief. I have provided a Venn Diagram for you to take notes. Note any differences you see between the book and the movie and then indicate the main points that they both share in common.
*Note, there are many parts that have been fast forwarded through (you DO NOT have to indicate to me which parts have been left out). Simply indicate if there are any differences (ie; they changed the events/action/setting, sequence, plot, added something, or other).
* I would advise filling out the Venn Diagram while you watch the movie. There will be a follow up writing activity to compare and contrast any differences between the book and the movie.
Writing:
Write one complete paragraph (8 sentences long) comparing and contrasting the differences of The Lightning Thief the movie vs. The Lightning Thief the book.
Use your filled out Venn Diagram with the notes and “text evidence” you wrote down while watching the video to support your claims. (As always, use C.O.P.S: Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation and correct Sentence Structure and Spelling).
*Also, if you feel like you are needing an extra challenge, see if you pick up on any foreshadowing in the movie.
Foreshadowing is where the author drops hints about what will come next. "Fore" means in front of something and "shadow" means to “cast a shadow over”. Foreshadowing can help a reader to make accurate predictions and follow a storyline easier.
For example in the beginning of the movie, there is a clip with Percy under the water for an extended period of time. Percy also states that he can think best in water. Though we do not know it yet, Percy can be under the water for long periods because he is the son of Posiedon (the “sea good”).
Also, later when it is revealed that Percy is the son of Posiedon, we are able to quickly recognize this to be true and then all of those seemingly unrelated traits and events will make more sense too.
Another example is in the scene where he is at Camp Half Blood and in the room with all the “good and no good’s” warfare trinkets and out of all of them, Percy goes over to Poseidon’s trident and picks it up. It is as if he is drawn to or connected with it in some way, and in fact later on, we find out that he is.
Now, test yourself and see if you can recognize any other foreshadowing events that take place in the movie.
As always, have fun with it and let me know how it goes.
