How did the success of merchants and bankers during the Renaissance benefit artists?

Florence, Italy in the 1400s
Merchant class: wealthy and powerful store and business owners who served as patrons for artists

Wool and Banking leading industries

Wool:
One out of three Florentines worked in the wool industry-even named streets after it: Road of Dyers and Street of Shearers

Banking:
As rich and powerful as the nobility. Patrons of the arts.
The Medicis
Cosimo de Medici
Genius at banking controlled the local government
Commissioned the Duomo Cathederal in Florence: artist: Brunelleschi brilliant architect

Lorenzo de Medici
Great patron of the arts and made Florence Italy’s capital of art and learning-but not a great banker.

In 1512 Giovanni named Cardinal and went on to become Pope Leo X.

For tomorrow Read Chapter 4 “Rome and the Renaissance Popes” pages 32-39
