Welcome 4-5th graders. We are more than half-way through our school week. Let’s do this! Click on the link below to find out what’s in store for you today. (Hint- It’s gonna be awesome:)
Vocabulary
Let’s address the ghost in the room--the silent diagraph “ghost” ( ie; the silent letters within your vocabulary words this week. The “kn”, “gn” and “mb” letter combinations pronounced with silent letters.
Let’s continue to practice writing these words as the spelling can be tricky.
Your assignment is to write out the words 3x using: different colors, funky letters or fonts and cursive. You may write it out on paper or type it out and send it to me via email.
***Examples have been provided above on the video posted under the agenda.
Writing
Today, we will think about our reading so far in, The Lightning Thief and apply text connections.
Your writing prompt is as follows:
Do you relate to the main character, Percy Jackson, in any way? How so?
OR
Have you ever experienced anything similar to anything that has happened so far in the book? Explain and give details.
Some examples of a topic sentence using a text connection might be:
I can relate to the main character, Percy Jackson, from The Lightning Thief, because just like him, I have attended many different schools. I know what it feels like to have to be the “new guy” and I also know what it feels like to not “fit in”. Or...
I can relate to the Lotus Hotel and Casino incident that occurred in The Lightning Thief, where Percy Jackson and his friends lost all track of time when playing their favorite video games there. This happens to me all the time. One time, ….
-Note- The great thing about responding to Writing Prompts is that there is no right or wrong. Whichever stance or opinion you have is fine. You simply need to be able to write your stance clearly, explain your reasons, provide support, evidence, and or details as well as use proper grammar, punctuation and other writing conventions.
Essay Requirements-
4th Grade- 2 paragraphs (approx 6-8 sentences per paragraph)
5th Grade- 3 paragraphs (approx 6-8 sentences per paragraph).
***As always, edit your work by bringing out the C.O.P.S and checking for Capitalization, Organization (clear beg-mid-end sequence, as well as a topic and concluding sentence), Punctuation, and Sentence structure/proper Spelling.
This assignment can be done on a plain piece of paper or through a Word or Pages document. When you have completed it, email it to me.
Science/STEAM Project
We’ve been learning about ostriches and you guys did a great job of breaking down the specific characteristics and detailing facts to me about the ostrich in both the Venn Diagram and Writing assignment.
Now, I want you to draw a picture of an ostrich and label and highlight some of its special features (ie; eye size, beak, typical weight and proportions, where the feathers are located, length of legs/neck, wing span, tail feathers, feet type, etc).
Then, highlight the advantages of these adaptations (ie; how these features and characteristics help ensure its survival and make it well suited to their particular environment).
***Note- if you need to refer back to the original reading from EPIC, follow the link below.
Math
For today, we will continue learning about Division (dividing with remainders, dividing multiple digits by 1 digit numbers as well as dividing with zeros in the quotient).
Today’s assignment will also incorporate multiplication within the word problems. We don’t want you to forget how to multiply.
You will need to be able to determine when to multiply and when to divide for a given word problem.
The Math worksheet is available for download at the bottom of the page. You can print it, fill it out, scan or take a picture of it and then email it to me. Or, you can do the work on a separate sheet of paper, but it MUST contain the Week/Day info as well as your name, in order for me to be able to grade it and give you credit for it.
***Note- all Language Arts/English assignments (this includes, Reading, Writing, Grammar) as well as Math assignments are mandatory. You are responsible for turning all work in and or logging into Khan Academy. The grade you earn will be reflected by whether or not you have done this.
