Welcome 4 & 5th graders.  Let’s get going.  It’s a new week and a new opportunity to put your best foot forward.

Click on the agenda below to review the line up.

Reading/Writing:

Today, I will read a portion of The Lightning Thief to you. Then, I want you to summarize the passage that was read in terms of the smaller or short-term “conflict” it highlighted.

Keep in mind that this brief passage may not necessarily be the overall, main or central conflict of the entire story or book.

Oftentimes, a book will present a string of conflicts or problems that will draw the reader forward on the journey, strung one after another like a series of pearls on a pearl necklace.

Each problem will have to be overcome one at a time, but ultimately each progresses the plot forward leading next to the turning point and then finally a resolution.

In last week’s Reading/Writing activities we explored the 4 different types of conflict (ie; Character Vs Character-1, Character Vs Nature-2, Character Vs Society-3 and Character Vs Self-4).

Identify which conflict this passage of The Lightning Thief depicts from the above 4 types.  Be able to provide evidence and support through your simple, clear, but detailed summary.

A review for what a summary is will be provided by Khan.

Social Studies:

I will provide a brief overview and timeline of some of the occurrences to chart for you what was going on in this country in the early 1800’s leading up to the Civil War.

Today we will explore some of the radical ideological differences between the Northern and Southern States during the early formative years of this Nation.

Today’s discussion will touch upon how the North and South differed in terms of ideas relating to economics and political theories and structures and how this was specifically tied to the Slave Trade and practices of the time.

We will discuss the major division and split of the North and South and then move on to explore how Slavery was impacted.  After the timeline and overview, you will learn about the Underground Railroad.

The Underground Railroad was a highly elaborate and organized system of underground tunnels, paths/routes, boats, wagons and safe houses, that stretched from the far deep south all the way up to Canada.

This system of routes served the purpose of helping individuals enslaved in the south reach safe haven and freedom up in the north.

Building on what we learned last session we will move to canceling zeros when Dividing.  I provided a brief video of this to you last time to introduce you to the idea.

You will first watch video(s) then practice some on your own.   Follow the links below.

A practice worksheet has also been provided for you at the bottom of the page!
