Welcome to day 2. Let’s get started. Click onto the link below for an overview of the agenda as well as for your first assignment of the day (Vocabulary).
Vocabulary
Today we will be working on Homophones for Vocabulary. Homophones are two words that sound exactly alike, but are spelled differently and have different meanings too.
Today you will take the first two homophones from your list: bored and board and fill out the word web worksheets for each word.
The Word Web will give you practice writing the word correctly, filling out the definition, identifying the part of speech, using it in a sentence, and stating an approx synonym and antonym, thus becoming highly familiar with each word on your list.
Attached you will find the Word Web worksheets to get started.
Reading
Next hop on over to EPIC and read the book titled, Separate Is Never Equal.
Pay close attention to the following words: segregated, petition, lawsuit, ruled, language, race, ethnicity, degrading, superior, appealed, lineage, and race (you will need to be able to understand them in context and know the basic working usage and meanings of each of these words).
Make sure to use your “Close” reading strategies and check yourself for improved comprehension (ie; read and re-read, highlight, annotate- or make notes, learn new vocabulary, ask questions, summarize to answer questions, talk about the text, gather evidence, and make inferences).
Print out the Worksheet assignment that goes along with today’s reading at the bottom of the page. That way you will be able to easily fill it out as you go along.

Science
A while ago we studied outer space with Bill Nye the Science Guy and in an effort to keep you looking up at the night sky and staying curious about outer space (or at least aware of it), I’ve designed a homework assignment for you to become a moon gazer.
That’s right. In this activity you will chart the phases of the moon.
As we studied this year, the earth orbits around the sun and the moon orbits around the earth. As the moon spins and orbits the earth, and depending on where the moon is in relation to the sun and whether it is reflecting and receiving light from the sun, the shape of the moon appears to change.
For this reason, it looks like the moon is constantly changing shape. The truth, of course, is merely that only certain parts of the moon is being illuminated by the sun during that particular time. (The moon is always full and whole, even if it doesn’t appear that way).
These “different” shapes of the moon are called phases and I want you to chart the shape of the moon for the next approx 28-29 day time period. This is the approximate amount of time it takes the moon to make one complete trip around the earth.
I will show you examples of the orbital pattern the moon makes and we will see the various stages and phases of illumination that the moon goes through in the video posted below. That way you will have an idea of what to expect for your charting assignment.
Click the links below to get started and as always, send in your work to me when you are done.
Math
We will continue to practice doing division with place value today. This is simply an extension of what we have been doing already.
